The Texan's Wager
A peek inside the first "Wife Lottery" book
Thrown off a wagon train with two other women and trying to avoid jail for a murder they committed, Bailee Moore agrees to enter a "Wife Lottery" - - a ploy concocted by the Cedar Point sheriff to secure wives for men in the small Texas town. For the sensible Bailee, however, marrying Carter McKoy is like exchanging one life sentence for another - - especially since her new husband hasn't even uttered a single word in her presence. But still, she can't help thinking that something about this strong, silent farmer could be they key to leaving her troubled past behind . . . and making a worthy wager with her heart.

"Ms. Thomas makes the reader more aware of the cruelty people have against things that they don’t understand or aren’t willing to and as a reader you stop to think about how it might affect you...by the time I was done, only several hours after starting it, I was a solid Jodi Thomas fan. I can’t wait to read her other books! This is a fantastic book, sure to entertain even the most skeptical readers. Don’t miss this fabulous read, but don’t start it at bedtime – you’ll be up all night finishing it! 5 Stars."

THE TEXAN'S WAGER is an honestly good story that drives home a universal truth -- love can overcome any obstacle and will always triumph over adversity. The love between Bailee and Carter is palpable, reaching off the pages and straight into the reader's heart.
Carter and Bailee are wonderful characters, and they'll quickly become a reader's treasured friends. Ms. Thomas makes the characters multi-dimensional and compelling, a talent which doesn't stop with the main characters. Lacy, Sarah and the sheriff are interesting characters in their own right, and I would dearly love to revisit them in future stories.
On par with Pamela Morsi's endearing stories, Jodi Thomas' tale of the Old West will warm your heart and touch your soul. THE TEXAN'S WAGER is a must read for lovers of expertly crafted historical romance.

THE TEXAN’S WAGER is a superb start to this new trilogy that will make my keeper shelf. The masterful blend of main characters, Carter and Bailee, as well as the other two women: fifteen-year-old Lacy Dillavou and twenty-year-old Sarah Andrews. I anxiously await the return of Lacy’s new husband who is currently off at war, and Sarah who is whisked away by a mysterious stranger.
. . . as soon as he (Carter) entered the story, I fell deeply in love with his character's quiet charm, demanding presence and innocence. . . Ms. Thomas does a stunning job with her narrative showing what Carter is feeling through his motions, portraying his strengths and weaknesses and making him into a genuine man with feelings, hidden fears, and joys.
Bailee also hides from her past. She has been handed some blows and overcome them as best she could. When she loves, she loves whole-heartedly. Her strengths compliment Carter's own personality perfectly. They are an ideal couple and it is impossible not to want to get to know them better.
I know that Jodi Thomas has long been a master at character development, but the portrait of Carter is her best yet. I eagerly await the second book in this series and hope it is not too long a wait. Kudos to Ms. Thomas for another stunning read! 4 ½ plugs!

"THE TEXAN'S WAGER is a poignant, heartwarming tale of two lost souls who find each other in a amazing way. Jodi Thomas's writing style is so smooth and straightforward that I lost myself int he story almost immediately. Realistic dialogue, outstanding secondary characters, a villain who will make your toes curl, and the vast, untamed backdrop of nineteenth century Texas round out this fantastic novel of love rising above everything. It's the perfect beginning for Ms. Thomas's new Texas trilogy. If, as I do, you love Texas, its exciting history, and a sweet romance, don't miss THE TEXAN'S WAGER. It's one terrific book.
