The Widows of Wichita County
A peek inside!
Apart from sharing the same zip code, Randi Howard, Anna Montano, Meredith Allen, Helena Whitworth, and Crystal Howard have absolutely nothing in common until a fiery explosion on a West Texas oil rig changes everything.
Their husbands are men who live to search for "black gold," men who are willing to exchange backbreaking work and long days for danger and excitement--and money. But on a blistering day in early autumn four of the men pay the ultimate price--leaving behind one man who wishes he had.
In one brief moment, the tragedy binds Randi, Anna, Meredith, Helena and Crystal closer together than a lifetime of friendship. As they gather at the hospital, waiting to learn who among them will not have to bury her husband, they turn to one another for support. And so begins a journey of faith, of strength, of tears, and of love.

“In a remarkably moving story, Thomas examines these very different lives and creates characters readers truly care about. From Highs to lows and back again, these strong women will stay with you long after you finish the book.

"The STEEL MAGNOLIAS meet THE ENGLISH PATIENT might be an alternative title for this book. Ms. Thomas' debut modern literature has a warmth and realism that has characterized her past writing, making it accessible to a new audience without abandoning her loyal following. Tears and laughter alike await the reader."

"THE WIDOWS OF WICHITA COUNTY marks Jodi Thomas's debut contemporary. Her career as a historical romance author has been unprecedented, but she proves she is capable of even more. Expect to run the full gamut of emotions from tears to laughter within the pages of this wonderful, poignant story."

"Jodi Thomas furbishes a powerful character study that will hook fans of women's fiction..."
Harriet Klausner, The Best Reviews
"Ms. Thomas does a brilliant job of weaving the stories together and bringing the reader into the tiny Texas town of Clifton Creek. She creates characters that are truly unique and loveable despite their flaws. While the women are remarkable in their main character roles, the secondary characters, especially Sheriff Granger Farrington and Zack Larson contribute much to rounding out this unforgettable story. It looks as if Ms. Thomas will find as much success in the contemporary genre as she has found with her breathtaking historical stories. Texas through her eyes no matter what the time period is a wonderful place. "

A Perfect 10!
Once I picked this book up, I didn't stop reading until, with a satisfied sigh, I finished the final sentence. I laughed, sniffled, and marveled at the five women and how they stumbled, fell, picked themselves up, and moved forward. Each woman brought a vital asset to the group, whether it was money, honor, intelligence, kindness, or laughter. Ms. Thomas brilliantly presented their grief and initial shock, and described how each woman faced the future. The book's climax will shows just how tough these ladies are.
From the first page, there is a whiff of mystery and a feeling that while four of the women lost their husbands, all five have forged a bond that cannot be broken. Beautifully written, THE WIDOWS OF WICHITA COUNTY is one of Jodi Thomas's finest works, which is why I have given it a Perfect 10.

I rate Thomas's move into contemporary womens fiction a success. The story of these five women whose lives changed radically in one horrible moment is a moving depiction of the power of friendship and the strength of the human spirit.
